| Hi Elbert, Attached are some of the PESO Field Trip Pictures from My Camera. The field trip was very interesting and enlightening. Thanks for making this possible and double thanks to you and Liz for the delicious lunch at the Pampangueno Restaurant. We enjoyed the whole trip to say the least. I've also attached some info below, for the benefit of those who were not able to come. Perhaps, others might add to it as they see fit for publication in our PESO website. Lito jr., please note. Cheers, Tante&Zeny Philippine Engineers and Scientists Organization (PESO) to visit the bomb squad of a fire department in Waukegan We heard a presentation about bomb threats and detection and disarming of bombs. There are a total of 451 bomb squads in the United States - 12 of them in the Chicago area. Ten% of the bomb squads consist of firemen, the rest being from the FBI and the police force. All the bomb technicians in the US have been trained in the Hunstville, Alabama Training Facility. We watched a demo on the operation of a robot specifically designed to enable close examination, detection and disarming of a bomb. (Xrays are used a lot and most of the time handled manually). This particular robot weighs 500 Lbs, and can climb stairs. It has 4 remote cameras that can traverse 360 degrees, and arms that can reach up to 9 feet of height, e.g. airplane overhead luggage bins. It is armed with high velocity disrupters that can expose, and/or disable a bomb with a water jet or firepower. It can carry as much as 200 lbs objects. It costs $200,000. Attached pictures show the classroom presntation given by Lt. (?) Tom Christensen. Also shown are kevlar bomb suits, various views of the robot, the robot controler. While in the firestation, I took pictures of the 3 basic trucks they have: a ladder truck that can reach up to 100 feet, a squad truck which carries the firemens equipment, and a fire engine which supplies the water. We had a group picture with the station supervisor, John Smith and the bomb technician, Tom Christensien) who demonstrated the operation of the robot. After the trip, we gathered at the Pampangueno restaurant for lunch- see our food choices. Close to 20 people joined the field trip. By cptagamolila, 09Feb2008 |
